The job board is an often overlooked way for students to find financial opportunities outside of school.
When local employers require help with their business, they may reach out to the school, in hopes of finding employees to fill their needs. With the aid of Aliso’s Career department, the job board brings potential local part time and seasonal jobs to students.
Mrs. McClenaghan works as the Career Guidance Specialist for Aliso Niguel High school. She is directly in charge of the school’s job board, updating and communicating with local businesses to find opportunities for students. She describes the board as, “opportunities that local employers and organizations share that are available for our students”.
Aliso Niguel’s job board is found outside, to the left of the library doors. The board holds a multitude of opportunities for Aliso Niguel High School’s students from local businesses on posted fliers. On the fliers, a title and job description are provided, detailing important information surrounding the job. This information ranges from pay per hour to background requirements and what the position entails. These descriptions allow the applicant to better gauge how well suited they are for the job.
Mrs. McClenaghan says that “the job descriptions in postings will let you know everything that is required [for the job].” So, if a student is considering a potential job, it is very important that they read into the job description.
Most of the opportunities are open to all classmen who are old enough to apply for a work permit. However, many of the jobs require prior experience and expertise. Some of the listings require knowledge in a certain field. Jobs such as math, english, and science tutors would require a student to have adamant knowledge of the subject matter. Other jobs require specialty training. Lifeguarding is a sessional job in high demand, but in order for a student to apply, a certification must be obtained.
The job board is updated as soon as a new listing appears. The Career department of the College and Career Center makes sure that as soon as a job offer is presented, it is posted on the job board.
Students can expect an influx of potential opportunities during different seasons. The lifeguarding position is usually a job that surfaces during the late spring to early summer period. Local pools and beaches require young adults to fill the positions, making advertising through the school’s job board the best way to attract attention to a company’s needs.
Jobs currently available within the job board range from a multitude of positions. For tutoring positions, Kumon and the Coder School are currently offering positions. Kids Factory, In-n-Out and Farmakis Farms are looking for part time hires, offering upwards of $22.5 per hour. And for volunteer work, the Fire Ecology program is offering internships for interested students.
The job board is a commonly overlooked way for Aliso Niguel High School’s students to easily find local and competitive job opportunities which fit their interests, for a reasonable wage.
