Aliso Niguel Girls Tennis has been on a rampage for the past eleven games now and is two games away from getting the chance to imprint its name upon the rafters in the school’s gym and make history forever.
Since the last tournament at Sage Hills, the Wolverines have beaten Trabuco Hills with a score of 14 to four with home home-court advantage.
A key component to the Wolverine’s success has been their serves and returns. Being able to keep the ball in play has a great advantage in a singles game, more so than playing for winners.
Later that same week, the ladies made the trip down south to San Clemente and beat rival San Clemente High School with a score of 15 to three.
With that score, the Wolverines were undefeated during regular season league play, an impressive feat for the girls.
In terms of their total record, the Wolverines finished 11 and three for the season, with a nearly unbeaten six and one record at home, and a five and two record on the road. This puts the girls just above a 78 percent win record. In all, the Wolverines have won 180 points and have only conceded 70 points against.
In the realm of doubles, Seniors Ann Kato and Sonia Mangat were the South Coast league doubles champions. Katelyn Bethard and Mia Johnson came in third place.
Kato explained, “My doubles partner and I have been working extremely hard for the past couple of years, and it is great to see hard work pay off in the end. We will continue to try and fight for as long as we can in CIF.”
This will be a memorable and sad year for Aliso because seven of the seniors on Varsity say their goodbyes towards the end of the season. Senior Night was a great way to honor and award them for their hard work and dedication to their craft.
Each of the exiting seniors got their own posters with their names on them and notes of congratulations. This was also accompanied by sunflowers which they all received.
Aliso played its first round of CIF on the day after Halloween against the Beckman Patriots with a home-court advantage. Beckman had a record of 13 and nine, taking the third position in the Pacific Coast league. However, this was only a minor hurdle for the Wolverines to overcome, winning by a score of 11 to seven.
In the second round of CIF, Aliso squared off against Yorba Linda High School, in which they had a 17 and four record for the season, and was second place in the Crestview league.
The Wolverines won by the same score as the previous game and advanced to the CIF-SS Division One quarterfinals against the Huntington Beach Oilers, who had an at-large bid to get into the tournament. The Wolverines stood triumphant once again and won by a score
