Aliso Niguel girls golf had themselves quite a season, coming runner up in the South Coast League play with a record of 5-2 as well as Victoria Wang claiming the best score in the CIF Southern Section Team tournament at The River Ridge Golf Course-Vineyard.
The Vineyard course proved to be a tough test for the girls as wind gusts were extremely high during the first day. As can be expected in these treacherous conditions, scores were higher than usual as the girls needed to either take a club up or down for their distance depending on the wind direction and speed of the hole they were facing.
However, this did not play a factor in Wang’s 72 on the day, even to par. This was the best individual score in the CIF Division Two team tournament this year.
Victoria birdied holes one, four, five and thirteen, making eight out of eighteen greens in regulation, 44 percent on the day. Wang also averaged 1.47 putts, therefore increasing her scrambling rate.
“I really need to focus on calculating the distance I want to play and how the wind will affect the direction of the ball,” Wang added.
Angela Bang, Reese Wilkins, Amelia Giler, Charly Wilkins, and Alexa Cole posted scores of 95, 86, 92, 100, and 103 respectively to combine for a team total of 445 strokes.
The overall team contribution put the Wolverines in thirteenth place, with the CIF Division Two title going to Crean Lutheran High School and St. Margarets High School.
Aliso Niguel’s Victoria Wang also competed in the CIF girls golf individual tournament this year. The Course for the individual event was held at Los Serranos Golf Club- South Course in Chino Hills, California.
Earlier this year, the course even proved to be a challenging test for the boys, in which the same course also held the Division Four CIF Team Championships on the boys side.
Then-Freshmen Austyn Le shot four over on the South Course in May, however, Wang beat Le shooting six strokes less, getting into the red numbers with a 71, three under par for the day.
Wang lit up the leaderboard with one of her main highlights being a birdie, eagle, birdie stretch with three holes in a row, the first being the 11 handicap par four seventh hole, the second being a seven handicap par five eighth hole, and the last being the seventeen handicap par three.
“I wasn’t expecting that (the three-hole streak) because I had a tough time with my driver that day, and I was having a hard time saving par. I was really nervous when I was putting the eagle putt, but making it also took off some of the pressure in qualifying for the next week.”
Wang made the Wolverines proud by finishing in a tie for third place out of the total fifty-five of the best golfers in Southern California.
As a result of her outstanding performance, Victoria continued her postseason run at the CIF Individual Championships on Nov. 5 at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon.
Wang shot even par on the opening nine, however, shot nine over par on the back nine, in which she shot a nine over 81. She finished T-51 place.
Although the outcome wasn’t what Wang was hoping for, her brilliant hard work, effort, and talent was displayed throughout the season.
