The Aliso Niguel Girls Golf Team has been playing extremely well this season with a record of ten wins and three losses. In league matches, the Wolverines sit at five wins and two losses.
In their head-to-head against San Clemente, Aliso won by 33 at the Aliso Viejo Country Club with a score of 202 to 235. Victoria Wang (11) was the medalist of the match shooting an impressive two under par. She hit 86 percent of fairways and 67 percent of greens in regulation.
In the reverse fixture of the duel later in the week, the Wolverines came out on top again, winning by 33 for the second time of the week with a score of 222-255 at the Bella Collina Golf Club.
Wang was given the chance to speak of her game and adjustments this season to put herself in a good position for an all-league achievement. When asked if any changes were made to her swing this year, she replied, “I worked on shifting more weight to the left and getting my upper body more on top of my lower body during the downswing.”
This has been a beneficial factor that compliments her 66.9 percent greens in regulation average for the season, as for her 18 birdies and an eagle cumulatively.
Another contributing factor is what is in the bag. Victoria plays the Callaway Paradym driver, the Callaway Mavrik 3-W, Callaway Epic 5-w, Taylormade 4h, Callaway iron set (5-PW), a Callaway set of wedges, and the Odyssey putter.
Angela Bang (12) is also another key component of the Wolverine’s success, averaging 7.2 strokes over par for the year with 65 percent fairways hit and 28.92 percent of greens in regulation.
Bang was asked about which professional golfer she looks up to. She said, “One of my favorite golfers is Ko-Jin-Young. I love how clean her swing is. It reminds me to keep a steady tempo and compact swing.”
Bang then described her goals and hopes for the remainder of the year. Bang said, “I’d love to make the cutoff for day two of league finals! But overall, I’m trying to enjoy it and not stress too much. These are my last few games in high school. For team CIF I’m excited to spend the night at a hotel with the girls before our tee time in the morning because the course is three hours away.”
Bang further added, “The girls and I are looking forward to spending more time together before the season ends, especially since four out of the six girls going are seniors. Team CIF will be the last time we play together.”
Team bonding has also been something that seems to work for the team. Co-captains Alexa Cole and Angela Bang organized a team picnic at Salt Creek Beach in which they made bracelets together. Most recently the girls had a team pizza party after they played their league match against San Clemente.
The Wolverines have completed regular season play, and are going to play in the league finals next week. Aliso’s final event will be the CIF Team event on Oct. 30.
