Since 2010, the Student to Student Program at Aliso Niguel has offered academic support to students who are learning English as a second language.
Started by former English teachers Ms. Frome and Ms. Bennett, and now run by Ms.Villasenor, this program offers academic support and encourages a friendly relationship between students and their tutors. Both being teachers of ANHS English Language Learners, Ms. Frome and Ms. Bennett noticed that these students would likely benefit from extra academic tutoring.
There is currently a need for more tutors. Those interested in tutoring must at least be a sophomore, have a 3.5 GPA, and be willing to commit for the duration of the year. This opportunity is not just about academic support, but forming connections and helping students feel supported by their staff and peers. Tutors are not required to be bilingual and those interested should stop by Ms. Villasenor in room 303.
Ms. Villasenor shares, “beyond this academic support, our student tutors offer friendship and truly become mentors. On the other hand, our English Language Learners get a chance to teach their tutors about their countries and cultures.”
The Student to Student Program meets every Thursday during Wolverine+ in room 301. They previously met in the library and hope to move back there as the program expands this year.
The Student to Student Program is an excellent opportunity for students learning to speak or seeking to improve their English skills, as it offers support and creates a bond between the tutors and the English Language Learners.
