Students at Aliso Niguel High School show trends and popular styles through their choice of clothing. Social Media being the main source of inspiration for many teens when choosing their style of clothing.
Different styles emerge in a wide variety at Aliso. From vintage to streetwear, to old money, students express themselves and their preferences through their different styles.
Popular clothing brands obtain primary profit from teenagers. For boys, brands like Nike, Vans, Dicky’s, Pacsun, and Stüssy are frequently seen on campus. As for girls, Brandy Melville, Hollister, Urban Outfitters, and Billabong are very popular.
The wide variety of clothing leaves plenty of options for students when choosing their outfits. However, many trending clothes do not meet the requirements of the dress code.
Many students overlook the dress code, and some students are not even aware of the dress code rules. The students who are aware of the rules claim that they are unreasonable and specifically targeted towards girls. Popular female clothing items like crop tops and tube tops are worn regularly by many of the girls on campus. In the dress code it states that students must wear, “A shirt (with a minimum of a 1 inch wide strap and fabric in the front, back, and on the sides immediately under the armpits).”
The dress code explains that anything less than a one inch strap is too revealing and “a distraction.” Many girls say this is not fair and that they should not have to abide by this rule.
Aliso Niguel high school student, Kate Avnaim (10) says, “I feel like it’s not reasonable because a one inch strap doesn’t make a difference. How are my shoulders going to distract people from learning? Are people going to fail their tests or not do their homework because of my shoulders? No.”
Girls at Aliso argue that the dress code is sexist and is not necessary, because no one pays any attention to something as simple as a girl’s shoulders.
Luna Kitsu (10) also states, “There shouldn’t be a regulation on tank tops because what is the difference between a one inch strap and a half-inch strap? Absolutely nothing.”
Furthermore, the dress code is not enforced by teachers. Girls are constantly wearing strapless clothing and not getting dress coded for it. This has some students wondering why the one inch strap rule is there if it is not going to be enforced by the staff in the first place.
The transition from tank tops to warmer clothing is starting as the upcoming fall and winter months approach. Many students are looking forward to wearing clothing for the colder weather, and can not wait to trade in tank tops for more comfortable clothing.
Hannah Mottaghi (10) says, “I’m so excited for the colder weather because I can’t wait to start wearing sweaters and hoodies again.”
Flare jeans and leggings are expected to reappear back on campus during the holiday season. Long sleeves and hoodies are also making their way back into students’ clothing rotation. Expect to see many students wearing PJs, sweats, cardigans, and other clothing items meant for the cozy weather on campus as the weather gets colder.
