This year, urinal dividers were added into the boys restrooms, made possible by the Student Atlas club, President Enrique Gonzalez and Vice President Caleb Ulrich.
Student Atlas held petitions last year at the school, promoting change for the boys restrooms, getting over 600 signatures to bring up to the school administration and the district administration.
Assistant Principal, Mocnik, Bill, called Enrique into the office after filing a Williams complaint. A Williams complaint is to gain attention for “conditions that pose a threat to the health and safety of pupils.”
The Williams complaint form described from Enrique, “The lack of school restrooms, lack of care of bathrooms and lack of bathrooms open.”
Although there were multiple concerns as to how the bathrooms were handled, the need for urinal dividers gained the main attention.
Both members of the club did not expect any success from the petitions, as it did not seem likely to both of them. Caleb Ulrich says, “I honestly didn’t expect anything to work at all, we did put a lot of effort into this and seeing it actually work was really rewarding.”
For a brief period of time last year, most school bathrooms would be open to the students at all times. Enrique goes to say, “We really did not expect that to work as well, especially knowing how strict the bathroom policies can get, even with this year’s bathroom policies.”
The petitions were a success, gathering attention from the principal and the school administration, receiving work orders for urinal dividers in the boys school bathrooms.
Student Atlas will be coming back this year at Club Rush, a club advocating for change at the school and acting as a voice for the students. Enrique says, “Through petitions and active actions, Student Atlas hopes to make a bigger impact this year, while with a new goal of more fun oriented activities.”
