Model United Nations
Aliso Niguel students participated in their second model United Nations, or MUN, conference of the year!
In the MUN club at ANHS, students involved gain experience in public speaking, debate and political science. The club’s first semester conference was held on October 23, 2021 at Capistrano Valley High School.
Most recently, Aliso delegates participated in a second conference on February 26, at Laguna Hills High School. Ahead of time, the hosting school sent out assignments for committees based on the students registered by Aliso Niguel’s MUN.
The club’s president, Maya Priestley (12), explains “there are committees like UN Women, UNICEF, Historical Committees, and a Futuristic Council.”
AJ Gutierrez (9) states “my topic was regulation of unsustainable agricultural techniques.” He shares that during the conference he learned about hydroponics and how “to keep soil fertile and try and make sure there is enough food without hurting economies.”
The practical and learning aspects of Model United Nations provide it to be a great experience for students looking to grow their knowledge of the world around them. Maya Deiser (10) elaborates that the environment where students can debate, and speak to students from other schools is beneficial.
Priestley follows up that “Model United Nations gets easier with practice [and] delegates are absolutely improving with experience.”
Looking ahead, a few Aliso Niguel MUN delegates have an opportunity to participate in a conference in New York. However, because of Capousd’s regulations with COVID-19 and the restrictions on out-of-state activities, the conference in New York is a non-school-sponsored event. The few members participating independently will attend the conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 18-21.
Additionally, Model United Nations will become its own class at Aliso Niguel in the 2022-2023 school year!
Advisor to the club and AP US history teacher Mrs. Reilly explains “the course itself will help us have dedicated time to prepare for conferences which I think will benefit students in their content knowledge of what happens in the world,”
She goes on to explain how the MUN class is another way for students to distinguish themselves in their academic resume as for Model United Nations is a well regarded international program.
Whether seeking more knowledge of the world around us, or pursuing dreams of politics, MUN is taking the world by storm.
