Braves Win the World Series

The Houston Astros and the Atlanta Braves played against each other in the 2021 World Series. The Braves won the title of World Series champions as they defeated the Astros by winning four games out of six. The games started on Oct. 26 and ended on Nov. 2. The first three games were held at Minute Maid Park in Houston and the other three were held at Truist Park in Atlanta.

The Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-0 in the League Championship Series which led them to their spot in the World Series. The Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 in a close game after securing runs in the fourth inning to go to the World Series.

Game one of the World Series was won by the Braves (6-2). Game two tied the teams as the Astros beat the Braves (7-2). Once again, the Braves secured two wins at game three (2-0) and game four (3-2). Following the fourth game, the Astros won game five (9-5).

In the final game, the Braves won the World Series with a score of 7-0. Jorge Soler hit a three-run home run that gave the Braves a lead in the bottom of the third inning. Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run in the seventh inning which scored the final point of 7-0 for the Braves. Tyler Matzek pitched two shutout innings in the seventh and eighth inning that prevented the Astros from scoring. Pitcher Max Fried had pitched six scoreless innings before Matzek took over.

“I’m numb. I’m numb. This is the greatest thing in the world,” Brian Snitker, Braves’ manager, expressed at the post-game interview. He told the Braves during their celebration: “You guys are going to be world champions for the rest of your life.”

“This is what you dream about every single year. You come into spring training wanting this to happen and it happened this year,” said Freddie Freeman after the game.

Jorge Soler was named the 2021 World Series MVP. “I’m extremely excited to be the second Cuban-born player to receive this award,” he stated.

The Braves have not won a World Series title since 1996 when they defeated the Cleveland Indians. The Astros won the World Series in 2017 against the Los Angeles Dodgers but were later determined by Major League Baseball that they had cheated. However, they were not revoked of their title.

Many have called the Braves’ victory at the World Series something that “defied all odds” and seemed impossible at the start of the season. The Braves had lost one of their best players, Ronald Acuña Jr., due to a knee injury. Other players who were injured included Mike Soroka and Charlie Morton. The Braves stayed under .500 (20 wins and 20 losses) until Aug. 8. But, with team resilience, they were able to become World Series champions.

The World Series Championship Parade was held on Friday, Nov. 5. A concert featuring Ludacris and Big Boi took place at Truist Park after the parade.
