63rd Annual GRAMMYs
April 12, 2021
On Sunday March 14, the 63rd annual Grammys, hosted by Trevor Noah, happened in Los Angeles. There were many great performances and many awards given out. Along with a lot of disagreement for some of the nominations and winners.
Artists were actually in the building, socially distanced and wearing masks, only taking them off when giving their speeches. Taylor Swift took home album of the year with “Folklore” and Billie Eilish brought home the record of the year for “Everything I Wanted” and best song written for visual media for “No Time to Die.”
For record of the year Billie stated that she did not think that she would have won the award and thought that fellow nominee Megan Thee Stallion would have won and dedicated the award to her. She went on to say that Megan deserved more and praised Megan for all for her hard work and dedication to music.
Speaking of Megan she is the first female rapper, since Lauryn Hill in 1999, to win the best new artist award. She also took home best rap performance and best rap song for “Savage.” Along with her wins she also performed a somewhat PG version of “WAP” with Cardi B.
Dua Lipa was nominated in many categories, but only won best pop vocal album. Harry Styles won best pop solo performance and performed “Watermelon Sugar.”
Beyoncé had a very successful night winning four awards including the best R&B performance for “Black Parade,” best rap performance and best rap song for “Savage” and best music video for “Brown Skin Girl.” She now holds the record for the most Grammy wins by a female artist with 28. Not only that but her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, ended up winning her first Grammy award ever.
This Grammys though created a lot of controversy over nominations and the winners of some of the awards. It all started when The Weekend did not get nominated for any award despite having one of the biggest albums and songs of the year. Do to this, he stated that he was going to boycott the rest of the Grammys, joining a long list of artists including Kanye, Frank Ocean and Drake. He stated that he would no longer allow his label to submit his music to the recording academy.
Many of his fans stood by him and his decision to boycott the Grammy believing that he did deserve a Grammy this year.
BTS was also one of the artists that the public did not expect to lose the category best pop duo/group performance. BTS song “Dynamite” lost to “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. But with the nomination they did make history of being the first Kpop group to be nominated for a Grammy and perform one of their own songs at the Grammys.
They had one of the most popular songs of the year and yet they still did not win the award. Many think that the Grammys was just using BTS for publicity to get people to watch the Grammys. The Grammys made it seem like they were going to win but ended up not winning.
This was one of the most interesting Grammys to have happened because of COVID-19 and the controversy that it stirred up. Do you think that some artists were snubbed of winning one of the most esteemed awards of the year in the music industry, or
